Homeo - similar
Pathos - disease
Principle of similarity.
Homeopathy, even though having originated in ancient times, is still one of the leading treatment systems. Yet Hippocrates (5 C BC) outlined some basic principles of homeopathy.
He noticed that there is a similarity between the toxic effect of a substance and its therapeutic action: "Causes of diseases can heal."
After Hippocrates this basic principle of homeopathic treatment has never disappeared completely from the history of medicine, however the beginning of homeopathy as a therapeutic method are considered to be the trials of Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843 - a German, studying chemistry, toxicologist and physician at the University of Leipzig). Samuel Hahnemann started making trials (on himself and on his relatives afterwards) to find out about the toxic effects of various chemical substances. His first trials were conducted with quinine.
Samuel Hahnemann noticed that with people, occupied in the production of quinine, specific symptoms, similar to intermittent fever are observed, which at that time was also treated with quinine. After his observations on quinine Samuel Hahnemann expanded his efforts with other toxic substances - Belladonna, etc. He gave these toxic substances in highly diluted doses (to himself and volunteers) and described the reactions. He then looked for patients with similar symptoms, such as those obtained during his experiments. He cured them by giving them even higher diluted substances and found out that the patients improved, nevertheless he noticed that although they are highly diluted, substances have toxic reactions. Thus he decided to dilute them further in order to avoid toxic effects, however until toxic effects disappear without losing the therapeutic effect. Thus Samuel Hahnemann found that the more diluted substances are, the stronger the therapeutic effect they have is.
75 substances have been studied fully in detail. Homeopathic substances are non-toxic - they have no harmful side effects, do not cause allergies. Accumulation of the medicine is not observed upon treatment with homeopathic medicines, because it is in infinitesimal doses. It is of interest that energy is brought in by taking homeopathic medicines, which drives the healing process. This energy is accumulated, so that a precisely determined amount of energy has to be brought in. This is controlled as with improvement taking the medicine gets less frequent at larger periods of time. Once improvement is achieved, we have to wait to see where it will stop and if the process has not stopped completely, a new dose is given. We should continue this way to full disappearance of symptoms.
Homeopathy belongs to holistic methods of treatment (whole in the meaning of complete). It treats the body as a whole (once the basic problem has been cured, the other problems are resolved as well). Homeopathy treats disposition to certain diseases, "it treats the field", which makes it suitable for chronic diseases. Other holistic treatment methods are acupuncture, acupressure, phytotherapy, slimming dietary therapy. WHO places homeopathy second among the most common treatment method; the methods of traditional Chinese medicine are first; phytotherapy is third and allopathy is only fourth.
Classic treatment with homeopathic medicines requires taking detailed history. The anamnestic information is not required for the diagnosis but to find a closer similarity to the pathogenesis of the suitable homeopathic remedy. History shows energy content in the body as well, so that the combination of symptoms indicates the suitable homeopathic remedy and the proper dilution ratio as well. Higher dilution ratios are suitable in the cases in which besides the specific symptoms, there are nervous symptoms as well.
